Upcycle Crystal Light Containers for Shoe Boxes
I received an email from Samantha a while back about how she recycles Crystal Light containers to put candy inside for her shoe boxes. You may recall a similar upcycle project I shared using plastic baby food containers. You could also use large gum containers for this project. I would still recommend putting the candy inside a plastic baggie before putting it inside the plastic continer. Hard candy can melt in hot temperatures and might leak out of the container, so it is always best to be cautious.
Here are Samantha’s instructions:
Crystal Light Candy Container
Here is a quick and easy way to make a neat candy container to put in your shoe boxes.
First take a crystal light drink (the one that has 6 packets of the drink mix) remove the label, decorate it with self-adhesive foam stickers, then fill it with candy or any other small trinkets that you usually put in your shoebox.
This project is a nice way to recycle unusable plastic containers, and to have something to put candy in!

I like to use these containers for Craft kits, I put together for the child to put together themselves. I supply the items the child will need with a simple picture instructions. Glue stick, sissors, and supplies fit great!
I never put a puzzle in a shoebox in its original box unless it is very small. I make a copy of the puzzle on a sheet of paper and fold it. Then I can put the puzzle pieces in one of these containers or a ziplock bag with that copy of the puzzle and save lots of room in the shoebox. Most puzzles have way too much leftover room in them to waste.
Now, why didn’t I think of that?!? I’ve been wondering what to do with the containers.
I love that folks are thinking outside the box. I’ve used the Hillshire Farm (or any other brand) lunch meat containers for years in my boxes. They’re great for hygiene kits (it’s a place to keep wet soap). I’ve put underwear in them (kids need/like to get them, but maybe NOT pull them out in front of all the other kids). Other uses: sewing kits, hair accessories, candy. I mark what’s in them so there’s no problem at processing center.
Blessings!
I simply think we need to be careful of how much plastic we send in our boxes. Our country is suffering from a glut of discarded plastic, and the plastic that is recycled is only recycled once. That’s here. In many of the countries where our boxes go, there is no recycling and the dump is right out their front doors. Minimal plastic is best. Cute or not.
